7.2 Adding and Subtracting Unlike Fractions
To find the sum or difference of 2 fractions with DIFFERENT denominators:
1) Find the LCD of the two fractions
a) find the LCM of the 2 denominators
½ + 2/3 LCM of 2 and 3 is 6
b) multiply the top and bottom of the fraction by the same number so your denominator is now what you want it to be
1(3)/2(3) = 3/6 2(2)/3(2)= 4/6
c) your denominators should now match
d) add or subtract as usual
3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6
e) reduce
1 1/6

try:

2/6 + 9/12 ¾ + ½ 9/10 + 1/50 3 7/8 + 5 1/3

try with +’s and –‘s

7.1 Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions
Take half a pie and add another half a pie you get-----one whole pie
½ + ½ = 2/2= 1
To add 2 fractions with the same denominator:
1) add the numerators
2) keep the same denominator
¼ + 2/4 3/7 + 2/7 14/25 + 4/25 12/5+ 3/5
To subtract 2 fractions with the same denominator:
1) subtract the numerators
2) keep the same denominator
4/7-2/7 9/10 – 8/10 25/100 – 10/100 5/4-6/4

*Always reduce answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
